The combustion that takes place in engines may cause the internal temperature to rise to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. If the vehicle does not have a cooling system operating at optimal levels, damage occurs. The heads may warp, the gaskets blow, and the engine fails. Repairs or replacement is costly.
The cooling system consists of the radiator, the radiator cap, the hoses, the coolant reservoir, the thermostat and the water pump. When functioning properly, the coolant circulates to reduce the heat created by the engine. The thermostat monitors the temperature as the pump circulates the fluid through the system and into the engine block.
The fluid levels should be checked periodically along with the ability of the fluid to cool and protect the engine. If the engine begins overheating, for any reason, some component of the system is not working properly.
